Princess Victoria was a British-built ferry that operated between Scotland and Northern Ireland, owned and operated by the British Railway company. She was launched in 1946 and began service in 1947. In 1953, she was converted from coal to diesel propulsion.
On January 31, 1953, the ferry was caught in a severe storm while crossing the North Channel between Stranraer, Scotland, and Larne, Northern Ireland. The ship capsized and sank, causing the loss of 133 lives. Only 44 passengers and crew members were able to survive the disaster.
The incident was one of the worst maritime disasters in UK waters during peacetime. It led to significant changes in safety regulations for sea travel, including the introduction of roll-on/roll-off ferries, which allowed for faster and safer loading and unloading of vehicles.
